Mark, we have had the majority of our 40 E450 cutaway vans in the Ford shop for transmission failure. The part that fails is the "coast clutch". All of our repairs have been covered by Ford due to the number of them. Some of the early ones were done 2 times because the replacement parts were defective. This concern started while under warranty. If your vans are out of warranty, call the C.S. line and Ford should graciously assist with the repair. The best results of that call is, after diagnosis and before the repair. Your Ford dealer should be able to get policy or full repair cost under warranty. Contact me via cell if you need more info. 610-780-9596. We lost 4 V-10 engines early on. The bottom end left loose. (it was very ugly) but covered by warranty. Be sure to call FORD FLEET C.S. 1-800-343-5338. To answer your original question/comment, we have some drivers that turned the TOW/HAUL off. This did not seem to make a noticible difference with the failures!I think we did most of the transmissions in our 25 2011 E450. Sorry for the book!

Mark, it is my understanding that the bus should be driven in Tow/Haul mode when driving under 55 mph. This will eliminate excessive shifting in and out of overdrive. I agree with Frank that Intermotive programs this in.

Mark I haven't had any issues with this on any of our cutaways.

Intermotive has an interlock adaptor for this. It's called the Brake Max Controller. Intermotive's number is: 530-823-1048. I haven't used this particular one, but the engineers at Intermotive are very helpful and maybe this can help.

For those of you who are running cut-aways, have you had any issues with the tow/haul switch. Our transmission failures have been on a drastic increase and we found out that the drivers were taking the buses out of tow/haul. Everything I have read indicates that in a transit application, the tow/haul is to be left on.
