John, At BARTA we have GFI. We had the Oddessy and now we have the new FAST FARE. GFI supplies a lot of reports that FTA and PA-DOT are looking for us to have.

RRTA uses GFI Odyssey fareboxes. As with any farebox they require a lot of preventative maintenance to keep them reliable. Ticket quality and moisture cause the most problems. And the fact that customers can't tell the difference between the coin slot and the dollar bill slot.
We have just completed the install of the AVAIL system but will not rely on that for the money reporting, we will continue to use the GFI reporting.

AMTRAN uses the AVAIL system with a Vector 9000, IEB unit, sun rise sign, communicating to a Diamond fare box with operator controlled dump button and smart card reader attached. Avail does have a few issues when upgrading software but they get the issues resolved after time. We like the system and the operators have come to trust it.

Hi John,

There are a couple major differences between the GFI and Avail systems:

GFI will count each bill and coin and measure that in the software. The GFI (or other software) reconciles the passenger count(s) to the bills taken and clearly documents this. Given the intense and in-depth audits that we have in the state, we stick to the GFI fare boxes primarily for this reason.

I like the Avail system, especially from a Maintenance view point, no moving parts. A heck of a lot less maintenance headaches. However due to the reconciliation we are sticking with GFI's.

My boss wanted me to reach out to everyone to see what everyone is using for automatic fareboxes. looking for the pros and cons primarily of GFI and AVAIL. We currently have AVAIL in all our fixed route vehicles and if it would make sense to use their fareboxes we will just looking to reach out and see everyone's opinion!!
