Our meeting (Cindy C, Steve M and I) at SEPTA went very well. Had the facility tour, introductions to some of the trainers and other personal working at this facility. The following is the information that I wrote down at the meeting with SEPTA. We are going to send, hopefully 3 people to their July 14th-Aug 1st, 3RD Class Bus Mechanic training. CAMTRAN has one, AMTRAN will send one and BARTA is sending 2 since they were the ones that started this and they have 5 people leaving soon. Their mechanics will be doing 30 days of training and we will be involved with the first 15 days, which should cover what we are looking for in an apprentices’ program. Electricity Basic, Wheelchair Lift maintenance, door basic operation and adjustment, brake Pneumatics beginners, brake reline procedures and possible preventive maintenance procedures (if they can work the last item in). They will be doing testing throughout all the training and this will be for our people also. If this works out then maybe in the future we can send people to some of the other trainings. The general helper training- which covers tool orientation, vehicle familiarization, battery service, chassis lubrication, tire and wheel service and steam cleaning (I will be sending my next service person through this) or some of our younger mechanics already working going to the 2nd class training. The authority sending someone will pay their mechanics wages. Then the authority will pay the upfront cost of a per-diem, hotel and mileage if being paid, and turn this into PennTrain for reimbursement. The person going to this training will be required to wear steel toed shoes and the proper mechanic clothing from that authority (NO shorts, muscle shirts, sneakers, sandals, you get the point). Attached is SEPTA's modules for 2nd class training and what they cover in their other class training for your review. John Miller will be sending a future "tentative" schedule for classes so we can try to plan ahead! |

Please review attachment, mark yes or no in space provided as to what you need/what for any new mechanic starting at your facility. We know that some properties have contracts to follow but we need to start somewhere in our information gathering. If you think something needs added, put in at the very end and I will see about adding it. Thanks |

All, I am inquiring to all maintenance directors as to what they need in the way of training for their “basic” mechanics position; doing a brake job, where all the brake components are located, Lift U operations and troubleshooting , what do you want or need? I am creating a spreadsheet to try and cover what everyone is looking for. Please a.s.a.p. before May 30th so I can finish for the meet with SEPTA (John Miller) on June 2nd. Send information to my email, garywilliams@amtran.org or post on web site for all to view (the best way). Thanks in advance! |

Hi Dan, we are currently completing our second 3 year apprenticeship program at SEPTA. Students graduate the program as 1st class mechanics. We use a three year program; however, given your circumstances, you may want a shorter program. Feel free to contact me (jmiller@septa.org) to discuss. I may be able to offer useful info to help with your program. Thanks, John. |

Does anybody have an apprentice program that has been used? I am going to need one. I have 5 mechanics retiring this year. I need to be prepared for that avenue. Thanks, Dan |
