We still see this issue in the E450's up to 2007 model year. I haven't had any on the newer ones. This issue isn't limited to the E450. Ford has had numerous recalls over the years on other models for the same problem. I know because two of my past personal cars had the recall; Escort and Contour. |

Ford has had this concern that I know of from the mid 1980s in the "E" series vans. I have seen many of these switches and harness connectors melted to where they should have been on fire but were not. The saving grace is the fuse for the blower motor. All technicians need to know that a higher amp fuse in any circuit is unacceptable. If the fuse does not blow, it will allow excessive heat in any circuit. However we at BARTA have 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011 E450 ford cutaways and have not seen this concern. I assumed that Ford had addressed the concern. Back in another lifetime, I installed a Motorcraft blower motor, switch and harness connector to have the concern go away. The amp draw in some after market motors can be as high as 2 amps above the FoMoCo motor. This combination should last for several years until the bearings in the motor begin to wear and cause the amperage to rise. Also be sure to add a ground wire from the blower motor to the chassis and from the dash to the chassis. Most of the time the ground circuit is overlooked. Keep this thought, when it comes to vehicle electricity and electronics, the ground is more important than voltage. It will create higher resistance. Older vehicles all componants loosen up creating a loss of ground. On newer vehicles pay close attention as to the paint that is placed at grounding points. Regards, Dan |

This was brought to my attention and I thought it was worth posting for everyone to see. I have been told that this is normal for the E-450 to burn up switches, harness, and fan motors. But when it results in a fire, it warrants further investigation.
