Steve, RVT allows smoking in the garage area (strange) and outside the building only. No smoking in offices or any company vehicles. We have to deal with breaking up excessive conversations between the drivers and mechanics that smoke. Denny |

Steve, CAT also utilizes an old bus stop shelter as the designated smoking area. Mechanics can smoke during break (they get two 15 minute breaks per day) or lunch period. I suspect some do "sneak" a smoke every now and then. There has been some rumblings about eliminating smoking altogether and making CAT a smoke free facility. There is also the "Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA)" , also called ACT 27 of 2008 which gives some guidance. |

Steve, We also use an old shelter as the "only place to smoke", no buildings, co.vehicles or buses. As for the mechanics they smoke at their break time 15 mins and lunch 30 mins at the shelter.Nothing permitted in the garage area at all. Will check on what is in our policy and pass it along. |

Steve, We also have established areas for smoking-- old bus shelters work great. As far as the mechanics are concerned, we don't have a written policy on smoking, but generally, I think a good rule to go by is a short break every two how hours. This works well because two of the breaks then fall during scheduled down times; i.e. the morning coffee break and one at lunch time-- so it helps to limit the amount of time off the floor. |

I'm curious how everyone deals with smoking at their facility, specifically mechanics. When and where are they allowed to smoke? We have a dedicated smoking area for all employees, but we do not have breaks. Now the mechanics are starting to take smoke breaks throughout the day. I would like to write a policy but would like to hear how everyone else handles this problem. Thanks, Steve |
